I have had a lot of emails with questions like, "How much KOH should I use per gallon of distilled water?", and "What formula do you use in your cell?"

These are great questions. I hope to answer them in a way that will help you get a better understanding of how to initially setup your cell's electrolyte concentration. This process will take approximately 30 minutes. Be patient, though, you will be glad you took the time to setup your cell properly.

As a general rule, I use this method every time I setup a new cell. I try to "Dial in" my cell until it maintains between 30 and 40 Amps, depending on the purpose of the cell. If you are using KOH flakes, crush them up a little to make it easier to measure. Use a glass bowl and spoon. Cover the flakes with a paper towel to avoid flying bits of KOH as you crush it up to make a powder.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
Be sure to follow good safety protocol. Wear eye protection, gloves, and protect your clothing. Get 2 gallons (about 7.5 L) of DISTILLED WATER. Get 3 glasses that will hold at least 2 CUPs (500 ml) of liquid each. You will need a funnel to safely add the dissolved caustic to the reservoir. Keep some Distilled White Vinegar on hand to counteract any spills. This will neutralize any Caustic that might be spilled.

STEP 1) Do this after you have completely assembled your cell!
Mix 1 TBSP (15ml) powdered KOH in a gallon of DISTILLED water. Shake vigorously until it is completely dissolved. Pour this mixture into your reservoir, and make sure it completely saturates your cell. Leave enough room in the reservoir to add 3-4 cups (750 ml to 1 L) of additional liquid. You don't want to completely fill your reservoir! Start the cell and allow it to warm up for 5 minutes. While the cell is warming up, go to STEP 2.

STEP 2)
Mix 2 TSP (10 ml) powdered KOH into 1 Cup (250 ml) of DISTILLED water. Stir until it is completely dissolved. The water may get warm as an exothermic reaction occurs. Set this mixture aside. Repeat this twice more. You should now have 3 cups/glasses of this mixture set aside.

STEP 3)
Check the amperage draw of the HHO Cell. Depending on your configuration, it should be around 10-15 amps. If it is more or less, this is OK. Now comes the "Dialing in" phase. If you are happy with the initial amperage draw, then don't do anything else. If you want more production and higher amperage draw then go to STEP 4.

STEP 4)
Shut down your cell. Open the reservoir and slowly add ONE of the prepared electrolyte cups you mixed in STEP 2. Use the funnel to pour it into the reservoir. Close up the system and turn the cell back on. Let it run for 5 additional minutes to allow the newly added concentration to circulate and the cell temperature to stabilize. You will see the amperage and production go up. This should raise the amperage draw by 3-5 amps. Check the amperage to determine if it is where you want it. Remember, it is harder to reduce electrolyte concentration than to increase it, so you want to do this slowly. If the initial 3 cups of additional electrolyte aren't enough, then repeat STEP 2.

STEP 5)
If your amperage draw and production level seems okay to you, you can stop here, and put the cell into service. If you want to "Dial in" a little more amperage draw, then repeat STEP 4 until you achieve the desired amperage draw and production level.

Remember, my rule of thumb is around 30 - 40 amps overall amperage draw on a fully warmed up Low Voltage dry cell. You can go higher, if you wish by simply dialing in more amperage at the initial setup phase. Just use caution when adding more amperage, you don't want the temperature of the cell to exceed the construction materials limits. The idea behind this method is to allow the cell to fully acclimate to increases in electrolyte concentration. As a cell warms up, it will inherently draw more current, so you don't want to add all the electrolyte into a cold cell. It may draw 20 amps right off the bat, but as it warms up, you could see exponentially more amperage and temperature to the point of a melt down. This we want to avoid. So take your time, and do it slowly.

MAINTENANCE
Now that your cell is fully functional and "Dialed in", you should never have to worry about runaway current or temperature. Every cold startup will draw between 15 and 20 amps, then as it reaches it's operating temperature it will reach the amperage draw you "Dialed-in".

As the cell consumes the DISTILLED water and your reservoir starts to run low, simply fill it back up with pure, DISTILLED water. There is no need to add additional electrolyte. For the most part, it will remain suspended in the solution. Over time, should you see a decrease in amperage draw and production repeat STEP 2 to bring it back up to peak operating efficiency. If, after some time, you feel the need to clean your cell, empty the liquid into empty DISTILLED water bottles and label them CHROMIUM 6. Dispose of them at your local TOXIC WASTE facility. Then, simply repeat this process to "Dial in" your cell, again!
